Bryan Marlborough, BS CSCS
I grew up playing sports and learned I had a very competitive nature; I love competing and challenging myself in many areas. Sports became a real passion of mine, particularly Football. I spent my entire football career playing Quarterback, where I learned to be a leader in many ways, among many other qualities that translate to my every-day life.
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education/Sport-Science from William Jewell College, and obtained a Missouri Teaching Certificate in K-12 Physical Education. Teaching in schools isn’t really my calling, however. After completing my degree, I began training for football tryouts to re-pursue my lifelong love of competing in football. I spent 1 1/2 years on training, practicing, and trying out for teams, and realized that I wanted to spend my time studying and experimenting on ways to improve my training to further enhance my athletic ability. I received the Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and began working for Summit Rehabilitation and Wellness Center as a Sports-Performance trainer. I gained significant knowledge and experience during my time there, and enhanced my working knowledge of training athletes for their respective sports.
When I was going through the tryout process (2007-08) I was 198-202lbs. (Definitely a pocket-QB) My 40yd time was in the 5.2-5.0 range, 20yd shuttle was 4.6-4.4, Squat was roughly 225lbs. and my throwing power was above average. Up to this summer I have increased my size to 225-230lbs, have run 4.7-4.8 40yd times consistently (4.6 best), consistent 4.2 20yd shuttle (4.1 best), and squat has been 410lbs. My throwing power has increased significantly as well. I don’t train steadily for tryouts anymore, but have still been able to improve while my training is of secondary importance.
My focus for programming and training athletes is Sport Physiology. I look at how the body moves during different actions for each sport; the primary movements, secondary movements, opposing movements, etc. I also look at the Energy-Sytem requirements and demands for each sport individually; Bio-Energetic structure of each sport, each position, and different ages/experience levels, etc.
My specific area of interest within Sports Performance is Injury-Prevention. I believe athletes are too often placed in an environment where they practice/train the primary movements related to their sport, while not giving enough attention to the opposing muscles/movments (i.e. concentric vs eccentric). These athletes are also placed in a training environment where they are required to perform a great amount of ‘volume”, whether it is practice, conditioning, or weight-training. This can lead to non-contact injuries, so my focus is on preventing these possible injuries so the athlete can experience success.
I have had success working with athletes from Volleyball, Football, Track & Field, Baseball, Soccer, and Basketball. I use specific, sport-based science as the basis for designing programs, rather than fad-workouts and a general approach to all athletes, and I am continually advancing my education in order to enhance my knowledge and services as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
