Soccer Goalies have a very unique role. Soccer is a hybrid Anaerobic/Aerobic sport for Midfielders, Forwards and for some teams’ Defensive-Backs, but Goalies have a strictly Anaerobic-Alactic position. Their position requires quick, powerful movements of running and jumping.
Core-Stability, Double and Single-Leg strength/power, and specific muscular endurance are all important parts of training Goalies. They need to be strong/powerful athletes with quick reactive abilities.
Goalie Training Highlights:
- Core-Stability – focusing on stabilizing the spine and allowing for transfer of power from ground through the upper-limbs
- Leg Strength/Power – focusing on Double and Single-Leg training to improve power, lateral agility, speed, and jumping ability
- Nervous System – focusing on developing the Central Nervous System (CNS) to allow for very quick, reactive movements
- Conditioning – focusing on the Anaerobic-Alactic energy system by using sprints up to 20 yards, and lateral-movements/jumps in multiple directions
