Exercise Review – Hang/Power Cleans
I want to start this post off by stating that nearly ANY exercise can be used for a positive purpose, as it pertains to improving sport-performance, IF it is performed correctly (regarding BOTH bio-mechanics and bio-energetics). Furthermore, ANY exercise can become an ‘Explosive’ exercise if performed/programmed correctly.
I preface this post because hang/power-cleans are thought to be THE choice of exercises to produce ‘explosive’ athletes by high school and collegiate coaches/strength staff. I personally don’t share this belief, and feel quite strongly about it. I want to go into detail as to why I don’t believe hang/power-cleans should be used at all for young athletes (or really any athletes that aren’t Olympic Lifters); however, I found an article by another very well-respected Strength Coach in the field who has outlined it better than I could.
